MLB Power Rankings (5/26)

What a difference two weeks can make. In the last Power Rankings, many teams were within a few games of their division leader, and it was very difficult to separate teams 5-25 on the list. However, it is quickly becoming apparent who is for real, and who just got out to a hot start (I’m looking at you, Kansas City and Pittsburgh).

Here is this week’s Power Rankings. The number in parenthesis after the team name is where that team was ranked in the previous Power Rankings.

1. Philadelphia Phillies (1)- The Phillies are kind of like the Miami Heat of the MLB. The only difference is, the Phillies actually try during the regular season.

2. Cleveland Indians (3)- Had Cleveland fared better against Boston earlier this week, they would have taken the top spot in this list. With the best record in baseball, the Tribe are still the biggest surprise this season.

3. Boston Red Sox (18)- Back from the dead, and it’s not even June. The Red Sox are finally getting it together, and the rest of the AL East better take note.

4. New York Yankees (8)

5. St. Louis Cardinals (4)

6. Milwaukee Brewers (25)- The Brew Crew has been all over the Power Rankings this season. Don’t get overly excited, though. They may have won six straight, but they still aren’t hitting the ball consistently against good pitching.

7. Florida Marlins (9)

8. San Francisco Giants (5)- Hopefully for Giants fans, Buster Posey’s injury won’t be the undoing of a team that was beginning to take control of the NL West.

9. Texas Rangers (16)

10. Arizona Diamondbacks (27)

11. Atlanta Braves (10)- This year’s Atlanta Braves are why Bud Selig’s proposition to add another wild card team from each league to the postseason isn’t so crazy…

12. Tampa Bay Rays (2)

13. Cincinnati Reds (12)

14. Detroit Tigers (11)- If Detroit is the biggest threat to uproot the Indians from the top spot in the AL Central, then Cleveland fans may not have to worry so much about a collapse.

15. Baltimore Orioles (15)

16. Colorado Rockies (17)

17. Seattle Mariners (28)

18. Toronto Blue Jays (22)

19. Los Angeles Angels (6)

20. New York Mets (21)- They did it! Congratulations to the New York Mets, just a day after its owners sold a minority share of the team to David Einhorn, for making the Top 20 of this week’s Power Rankings.

21. Chicago White Sox (24)

22. Oakland Athletics (14)

23. Chicago Cubs (23)

24. Pittsburgh Pirates (13)

25. Los Angeles Dodgers (20)

26. Kansas City Royals (7)- Not trying to be blatantly biased, but doesn’t this look a little more normal?

27. Washington Nationals (19)

28. San Diego Padres (26)

29. Houston Astros (29)

30. Minnesota Twins (30)- How long is it going to be until Minnesota is officially written off in 2011? Something tells me that it won’t very much longer…
