2020 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl Preview

January 3, 2020

We’re now down to the final few days of the bowl season.

As of Friday, only one college football game will be played for each day of play remaining.

On one hand, this puts the games in the spotlight, not needing to compete with other, more high-profile games. On the other hand, it’s an indication that it’s no longer a party that even the casual fans will be interested in.

So if you’re still reading, thank you. Around The Corn appreciates your support.

Let’s take a look at the game to be played on Friday afternoon.

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Nevada vs. Ohio (Friday, 3:30 PM ET – game on ESPN)

The Skinny: The Bobcats are returning to the blue turf for the first time since the 2011 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where Frank Solich’s team will look to beat a Mountain West foe in a bowl game in back-to-back seasons. The Wolf Pack will be looking for its second bowl victory in a row as well, which would presumably help head coach Jay Norvell work his way out of the Mountain West Conference cellar in terms of salary.

Why to Watch: It’s hard to argue that there is anything better going on in the sports world during this timeslot. But if that doesn’t do it for you, perhaps a trio of dangerous rushers for the Bobcats will. Running backs O’Shaan Allison and De’Montre Tuggle and quarterback Nathan Rourke have rushed for 2,150 yards this season, making Ohio’s attack really tough to predict.

What Will Happen: Given Ohio’s multiple options in the running game, Coach Solich will likely look to attack the teeth of Nevada’s defense with his best offensive players. The Wolf Pack were overall fairly competent against the run in 2019, but surrendered over 220 yards on the ground three times during the regular season. If the Bobcats can get Allison and Tuggle going, Rourke will add to the onslaught on the ground while simultaneously opening up the ability to go over the top. The Bobcats are the better team in most categories on paper, but Nevada is comfortable on the blue turf as a member of the Mountain West with Boise State, which could allow the Wolf Pack to keep things close.

My Pick: 34-20 Ohio for 6 points in Bowl Mania
