The last non-BCS bowl game should really have been played over a week ago, but nonetheless, we are finally down to the next-to-last bowl game of the season. I’m sure that neither Nevada nor Boston College wants to be known as “The National Championship’s Opening Act”, but since this game will probably end when it is already Monday morning on the East coast, that is essentially what it is.
I am already unable to win my College Bowl Mania group, so this game doesn’t mean that much to me from a points perspective. However, I am still interested in watching this game, as it could be a very entertaining.
Here is my pick for the January 9th bowl game.
Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl
Nevada vs. Boston College
This game has the potential to be very exciting. Nevada is led by their quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Kaepernick was thrust into the national spotlight when he helped the Wolfpack bring down Boise State back in late November, effectively dashing Boise State’s hopes of receiving a national title bid. He is a talented duel-threat quarterback, and unlike many other so-called “duel-threats” that come out of the smaller conferences, Kaepernick actually has the ability to both run and throw effectively. The Wolfpack also have a running back who has eclipsed the 1500 yard mark in senior Vai Taua, which makes the rushing attack even more difficult to stop.
Boston College isn’t the least bit phased by Nevada’s prolific running game. The Eagles have the best rush defense in the nation, and are led by linebacker Luke Kuechly, who leads the nation in tackles. The Eagles also have 19 interceptions on defense this season, but have had trouble at times stopping the passing game. Boston College will need a big game from the defense, because their offense is below average. The Eagles will look to get the running game working early, as that is their strength, but also to keep Nevada’s high powered offense off the field.
Because of Boston College’s stellar run defense, Nevada will need to have success through the air if they want to win. Luckily, Colin Kapernick has the ability to throw the ball as well as run it, as he has passed for over 2800 yards and has thrown 20 touchdowns this season. If Nevada has success throwing the ball, I think that they will be able to open up the running lanes and win this game. I have the Wolfpack for 30 points in the College Bowl Mania game.
