2015 MLB Power Rankings 5/17

We’re about a month and a half into the MLB regular season, so it’s about time that I cover the sport a bit.

Frankly, it’s about time that I cover anything.

The plan is to start doing Power Rankings on a bi-weekly basis for the remainder of the regular season. As with just about any other article series that I promise, this comes with the caveat that articles may not always be punctual. Things have gotten busy lately and it’s just a fact I can no longer dodge that my hobby of sports journalism is at best what I have always called it: a hobby.

Over the next couple of months, you may begin to see changes on this site, both in general layout as well as the content that is published. I no longer have the time to cover the multitude of sports as I once did, nor do I have the desire. Not having at least a general focus diminishes the overall product of the site. And in reality, there are only a handful of sports that I can write intelligent pieces about.

As the direction that I want to take with Around The Corn becomes more clear to me, expect to be updated of the changes via Facebook and Twitter. My hope is for the changes to bring not only a more focused experience for my readers but also the ability for me to update the content more frequently.

But I digress. This article is for power rankings. Let’s take a look at the current landscape in baseball.

1. Houston Astros – Houston was ranked last in my last Power Rankings. That was nearly two years ago, but still. Quite the turnaround in Texas thus far.

2. Kansas City Royals

3. St. Louis Cardinals

4. Los Angeles Dodgers

5. Detroit Tigers

6. New York Mets – Either I’m not following baseball very closely or the Mets are winning with mostly non-household names. Until I hear otherwise I’m going to assume the latter.

7. Washington Nationals – The Nats are the hottest team in baseball over the past two weeks. If you’re a Mets fan, you’re already preparing for the worst.

8. New York Yankees

9. Chicago Cubs – Sooner rather than later, the combo of Kris Bryant and Anthony Rizzo may become the most feared offensive tandem in the National League.

10. Tampa Bay Rays

11. San Francisco Giants

12. Minnesota Twins – The season is still green, but the Twins aren’t playing bad baseball currently. The unfortunate truth for Minnesota is that Kansas City and Detroit are playing much better than average.

13. Los Angeles Angels

14. Atlanta Braves – Shelby Miller came excruciatingly close to throwing a no-hitter today. While the feat would have been nice, Atlanta is more than content with Miller continuing to provide strong outings overall.

15. Chicago White Sox

16. San Diego Padres

17. Cincinnati Reds

18. Seattle Mariners – Nelson Cruz leads the majors with home runs, but Seattle’s spending spree hasn’t exactly panned out the way the front office would have liked so far.

19. Boston Red Sox

20. Pittsburgh Pirates

21. Baltimore Orioles

22. Texas Rangers – The daily update of Josh Hamilton continues, because that’s really the only interesting thing going on inside this organization currently.

23. Toronto Blue Jays

24. Arizona Diamondbacks

25. Cleveland Indians – So much for expectations. Sports Illustrated’s preseason pick to win the World Series is one of the worst teams in baseball through 36 games.

26. Philadelphia Phillies

27. Milwaukee Brewers

28. Miami Marlins – On the same day that the team came one out from being no hit, Miami fired manager Mike Redmond. Looks like it’s back to the drawing board. Again.

29. Colorado Rockies

30. Oakland Athletics
